Abstract

Locally resonant elastic metamaterials have a unique characteristic of forming a low-frequency bandgap where wave propagation is inhibited. In this study, we present a concept of auxetic meta-disks that can be installed on a pipe to control the flexural and torsional wave propagation independently. The auxetic meta-disks perforated with rationally designed auxetic patterns function as local resonators on a host pipe. The mode-dependent deformation of auxetic patterns are exploited to manipulate independently the flexural and torsional natural frequencies of the meta-disks. The capabilities of auxetic meta-disks in controlling wave propagation are thoroughly investigated using finite element analysis. Because of the simplicity in design and installation, the proposed concept is expected to be applicable to various fields of vibration isolation and non-destructive inspection as well.
